Rosny College presents RENT the musical – School Edition - Season May 16 – May - 24, Dwight Brown Auditorium, Rosny College

Rosny College students, under the Direction of Darren Sangwell and Musical Direction of Suze Ellis, have been working extremely hard to bring this year’s major production together, ready for a season of six performances starting May 16th. Rosny College sets high standards of performance, and RENT will be no exception. The show will be supported by a professionally designed and built set, a brilliant band of talented music students and an ensemble of amazing singers and dancers guided by the experienced choreographer Jacqui Coad.

The production will encompass many learning areas across the school.   VET (Vocational Education and Training) Hospitality classes will be responsible for providing and serving food at the Invitation Only promotional Gala Night on May 15.  The VET Live Production, Theatre & Events crew are looking after stage and technical sides, and the Housing and Design Class is responsible for turning a drama room into a RENT-themed arena for the Gala Night pre-show gathering.  The costumes for RENT are based on fashion and clothing styles from the 1980s.   All the costumes will be coordinated by Rosny College teacher Nicole Ottrey who will work with the Costume Class, and of course the Drama Classes perform, and the very talented band plays the music! The behind-the-scenes crew, headed up by Production Managers Bill Jarvis and Cathy Ransom, have a dedicated and hardworking band of students, staff and volunteers working on everything from programs to promotion.

RENT is a story of eight struggling friends in New York’s East Village trying to make a living and dealing with the issues of AIDS/HIV, homelessness, loss, debt and survival. The audience will be entertained and learn about an amazing story of the pain, grief and determination of this friendship group.

RENT was created by Jonathon Larson and was first seen in a New York workshop in 1994. The musical won many awards and is now the eighth most popular musical in the world.

Director Darren Sangwell is impressed by the hard work and the camaraderie of the cast, crew and orchestra.  This is the second time that he has directed RENT, and he is once again amazed to witness the effect that the themes of RENT can have on the lives of young people.

The College thanks key sponsors – Ant Manton Ray White Real Estate, Tasvend, UTAS and B&E, whose generous financial support allows us to maintain the standard of production that Hobart now expects from Rosny College.

Tickets are available from Centertainment – www.centertainment.com.au or ph 62345998, 56 Elizabeth Mall Hobart. Adults $25, conc. $20.
