Tasmania is punching above its weight in the annual Australia Day honours. Ricky Ponting headlines an illustrious list for his services to cricket and cancer research, appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia. Hobart scientist Peter Davies' passion for freshwater ecology has seen him appointed a Member of the Order. Launceston veterans' advocate Terry Byrne has an Order of Australia Medal. Emergency service medals have gone to police commanders Tony Cerritelli and Mark Mewis as well as paramedic Des Lane. Agfest stalwart Judy McLean has an OAM for her work with youth and rural Tasmanian communities. Tasmania's North-West Coast region has missed out this year after two residents made the list last year. |
